K-content is reaching new audiences through CJ 4DPLEX’s special-format theaters A rendered image of a panoramic SCREENX theater CJ 4DPLEX is driving the global expansion of K-content through special-format theaters powered by its proprietary SCREENX and 4DX technologies. On May 7, CJ CGV announced that the cumulative admissions for K-content presented through its subsidiary CJ 4DPLEX’s special-format theaters have surpassed 2 million globally. This major milestone shows how the company’s special-format theaters have become a key platform for bringing K-content to wider global audiences. In 2015, CJ 4DPLEX began rolling out special-format screenings globally in nine countries with six titles, including “Snowpiercer” and “Assassination.” Since then, the company has steadily increased its title count while expanding its worldwide reach, presenting a total of 82 K-content titles in 69 countries to date. The annual global audience has also grown over tenfold from about 30,000 in 2015 to more than 300,000 in 2025, when 18 titles were released across 45 countries. Throughout this period, hit Korean films such as “Train to Busan,” “Peninsula,” “Emergency Declaration” and “Exhuma” were consistently introduced to international audiences through special-format theaters, helping expand the global reach of Korean cinema. Moving forward, CJ 4DPLEX plans to continue broadening K-content’s global reach through special-format theaters. The horror film “Salmokji: Whispering Water” began its international rollout in SCREENX and 4DX formats in mid-May, first in North America, then followed by Japan, Vietnam and other markets. More titles, including Cannes Film Festival official selection “Colony” and “OK! MADAM: BON VOYAGE,” will also reach international audiences through SCREENX and 4DX formats. Concert and live performance titles have also broadened the global audience base. Titles featuring popular artists such as BTS and SEVENTEEN have been screened in multiple countries, drawing flocks of K-pop fans and demonstrating the global scalability of special-format theaters. Special-format theaters are helping sustain this growth by expanding K-content’s global reach through differentiated cinematic experiences. SCREENX maximizes immersion by extending visuals from the center screen to the side walls, while 4DX combines motion chairs with environmental effects to turn viewing into an interactive experience, creating more ways for audiences worldwide to experience K-content. “Beyond expanding K-content through special-format theaters, we are strengthening our competitiveness by advancing CG, VFX and AI production technologies to improve quality and efficiency from the production stage,” said Jun Bang, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX. “We will continue to enhance the value of our content through technology, helping K-content reach wider global audiences.”
