For 17 years, CJ 4DPLEX has been redefining what it means to experience cinema — building formats, deepening studio partnerships and expanding its global footprint, one film at a time. The company’s latest initiative to bring immersive cinema to viewers, Shot for SCREENX, debuts with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”

“CJ 4DPLEX and their team came to the set of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to shoot footage that you will experience specifically for SCREENX auditoriums,” said director Destin Daniel Cretton. “This is something truly unique.”
On the set of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” CJ 4DPLEX rolled cameras alongside the production crew, capturing footage designed specifically for SCREENX theaters. It was, in every sense, something new.

From Sensation to Format: How 4DX and SCREENX Were Born (2009-2012)
Since its founding, CJ 4DPLEX has been driven by a single pursuit: expanding the boundaries of immersive experience that are only possible inside a theater.
In 2009, CJ 4DPLEX introduced 4DX at CGV Sangam in Seoul — a thrilling cinema experience in which seats moved, wind blew and water sprayed in sync with the action on screen. The idea was simple but radical: What if the theater itself became part of the story? While the broader industry was skeptical, CJ 4DPLEX pushed forward with a clear conviction — that the cinema experience could offer something no living room ever could.
Three years later, in 2012, that conviction took another shape. CJ 4DPLEX developed SCREENX — the world’s first multi-projection cinema format and its most immersive platform — extending scenes beyond the main screen and onto the side walls of the theater to place audiences at the heart of the movie through a 270-degree panoramic viewing environment.
What began as a bold experiment in Seoul has since grown into a global network of 4DX and SCREENX locations spanning more than 1,260 screens across 76 countries — generating 497 million USD in combined global box office in 2025 alone, a 32% increase year over year.

Growing Into a Collaborator: Studio Partnerships (2012-2024)
During this period, 4DX continued to grow its global footprint, while CJ 4DPLEX deepened its creative collaboration with studios through SCREENX — learning how to bring each director’s vision to life within the 270-degree panoramic environment. Building industry recognition for an entirely new cinema format took time, but each collaboration demonstrated the format’s creative potential.
The turning point came with “Top Gun: Maverick,” released in 2022. During production, director Joseph Kosinski installed six cameras inside the fighter jet cockpits to capture the raw aerial action. Working closely with Kosinski and Paramount Pictures, CJ 4DPLEX incorporated side camera footage from the film’s six-camera cockpit array into the SCREENX version, filling both wings of the format with real photography.. The result was 58 minutes of exclusive SCREENX imagery — the most ever produced for a single film at the time.
The collaboration was one of many that continued to deepen the creative possibilities of SCREENX — and the relationship between CJ 4DPLEX and the filmmakers who brought their visions to the format.

Stepping Onto the Set: The Launch of Shot for SCREENX (2025-2026)
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is the first title to carry the Shot for SCREENX designation. Under the Shot for SCREENX model, CJ 4DPLEX works with directors from the production stage — capturing footage conceived and designed specifically for SCREENX’s 270-degree panoramic environment, shaping what audiences will experience on the side walls of the auditorium. Building on CJ 4DPLEX’s established SCREENX capabilities, Shot for SCREENX represents a new collaborative possibility — one in which global studios and filmmakers can work with CJ 4DPLEX from the production stage to craft a SCREENX experience tailored to their creative vision.
“Shot for SCREENX represents an exciting evolution for our format,” said Jun Bang, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX. “Our goal is to create a more encompassing experience that brings audiences closer to the story, the action and the world of Spider-Man.”
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” opening July 31 in SCREENX theaters worldwide, will serve as the first major showcase of what Shot for SCREENX can deliver at full scale.

Seventeen years ago, CJ 4DPLEX set out to expand the boundaries of what audiences could experience inside a theater. With Shot for SCREENX, that pursuit takes on a new dimension — one that begins not in the auditorium, but on set, in collaboration with the filmmakers who bring stories to life. As CJ 4DPLEX continues to grow its global network of 4DX and SCREENX locations, Shot for SCREENX stands as part of CJ 4DPLEX’s ongoing exploration of what becomes possible when immersive cinema technology and creative vision come together.
