CJ 4DPLEX announced on September 4 that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” surpassed 104 million USD at the global SCREENX and 4DX box office, setting a new all-time record for the two premium formats.
The milestone was reached just 33 days after release, surpassing the previous record of 103 million USD set by “Avatar: The Way of Water” over its 228-day theatrical run.
Since its global release, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has been screened more than 115,000 times across 1,200 SCREENX and 4DX locations worldwide, generating more than 6.7 million admissions. The film recorded an average seat occupancy rate of 40%, demonstrating strong audience demand for premium formats and their competitiveness in the theatrical market. SCREENX also set all-time opening records in 36 countries, while 4DX achieved record-breaking openings in 22 countries.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is the first Hollywood studio title to carry the Shot for SCREENX designation. Traditionally, completed films were adapted for the SCREENX format during post-production. With Shot for SCREENX, however, CJ 4DPLEX works with directors and production teams from an early stage of production to integrate SCREENX-specific creative direction into the filmmaking process.
For key sequences, SCREENX-specific direction was incorporated from the early stages of production to maximize spatial immersion within SCREENX’s 270-degree panoramic environment. This approach advances SCREENX beyond its traditional post-production-centered workflow and demonstrates new possibilities for creative collaboration among CJ 4DPLEX, studios and filmmakers.
“‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has delivered results beyond expectations with audiences around the world,” said Steven O’Dell, President of International Marketing and Distribution at Sony Pictures Entertainment. “Through Shot for SCREENX, our creative collaboration with CJ 4DPLEX elevated the theatrical experience and demonstrated how format innovation can create greater value for audiences. We are especially pleased to see that this approach has resonated so strongly worldwide.”
“‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is particularly significant because it set a new SCREENX and 4DX record in just 33 days, the fastest pace ever for the formats,” said Jun Bang, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX. “As the first title to carry the Shot for SCREENX designation, the film also marks an important evolution in how we collaborate with filmmakers and studios, bringing SCREENX into the creative process from an earlier stage.”
“This milestone demonstrates the value premium formats can create across the theatrical ecosystem, from audiences to studios and exhibitors,” said Don Savant, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX America. “SCREENX and 4DX give studios and filmmakers powerful platforms to differentiate their films, while helping exhibitors strengthen their competitive position by delivering distinctive theatrical experiences that audiences actively seek out.”
